How to Remove Pet Stains & Odor

carpet cleaning st louisYou may be surprised to know that over 80 million US homes have cats and/or dogs; what this means it there are potentially 80 million carpets that can have urine related issues. Follow these tips from Fresh & Green and you may be able to buy a little time before your next professional cleaning.

Why are pet stains so difficult to remove?

Pet urine is basically uric acid crystals. The products that contain soaps and detergents simply will not work to break these urine crystals down. Professional carpet cleaning methods that are offered by Fresh & Green are the only sure way of getting rid of urine crystals permanently.

Why are small urine spots hard to find?

A recent article by the Humane Society mentioned that you may be able to use a backlight to find out where the urine spots are. However, backlights also bring other things to light and can sometimes be misleading.

If you see a stain, chances are it’s a lot deeper than what you can see.

When a pet pees on the carpet, it’s not just on the surface, it’s in the padding as well. This is why it is recommended that the carpet pad is replaced in order to achieve 100% odor removal.  Otherwise, you can only treat so much from the surface of the carpet.

Here are a few tips if you’d like to do it yourself:

First remove as much of the waste as possible without rubbing the fibers, which can cause distortion.

Next you will want to use an absorbent towel and place a weight on it to absorb as much of the stain as possible, again do not rub.

You may be able to find urine/odor removal products at stores such as Petsmart that you can use that should help with the stain/odor.

Saturate the area with the urine/odor removal product that you’ve bought from the store; be sure you use enough to cover the entire surface of the stain.

Do not rinse the product out immediately, this is a big mistake! You will want the cleaner to have some time to do the job of breaking down the urine in order to remove the odor.

After dwell time, use a shop vac to recover what you put down as well as any of the stain/odor that has broken down from the carpet and padding. Keep extracting until you’ve gotten it all out.

Use whatever deodorizer products you have on hand such as febreeze or some other brand. This will help also to freshen up the area you have just extracted.

There will still be some residue that will be left behind. For any old stains, you may just want to call a  professional carpet cleaning company that specializes in odor removal like Fresh & Green Carpet Cleaning. We have the equipment and the knowledge to tackle any task.
